Backyard Wilderness

March 8th, 2026

1:30pm - 2:30pm

Join Leila Armstrong at the Nature Centre as she presents her doctoral research project, Backyard Wilderness: An interdisciplinary investigation of the urban ecology of Lethbridge.

Backyard Wilderness is an innovative exploration of urban ecology that blends scientific research with creative expression—revealing the wildlife living alongside us and challenging how we think about coexistence in the city.

Through trail cameras, community surveys, and interviews, paired with thought provoking artworks, installations, and public exhibits, Armstrong’s research weaves together data, stories, and visual culture. In this talk, she’ll share key findings from both the quantitative and qualitative sides of the project, highlighting how art and science can work together to deepen our understanding of urban wildlife—and our role in advocating for coexistence.
